FAQs

Am I qualified to be a foster parent?

The state of Alabama requires you to be at least 19 years of age and able to provide a safe, stable, and comfortable environment for the child. Those interested must be willing to undergo a thorough background check and comply with the Alabama Minimum Standards for Foster Family Homes.

Am I called to be a foster parent?

The Bible tells us on 9 different occasions to “love your neighbor.” At Childhaven, we believe it is our job to do just this for the families and children that we serve. Loving our neighbor is messy and difficult, but incredibly rewarding. If you have a willing heart, love for children, and passion for uniting and empowering families, you may be called to this ministry.

What are the first steps in becoming a foster parent through Childhaven?

The first step would be to complete the interest form at the bottom of this page or to contact the Childhaven Foster Care Social Worker, Madison Hayes, at madison.childhaven@gmail.com. Next, an application will be provided along with additional necessary paperwork. After these steps, you will go through a 10-week training program and complete a home-study evaluation.

Can I adopt a foster child placed in my home?

The number one goal of the foster care system is reunification with birth families. However, in the event that a child cannot return home or be placed with other relatives, foster parents have first consideration as adoptive parents. Foster-adoptive parents who adopt through DHR (as you would through Childhaven) do not have to pay fees that private adoption agencies charge.
